There’s increasing evidence showing that more men are working to maintain younger-looking, healthier skin with specific products and targeted therapies.

Compared to women, men’s skin is generally 10-25% thicker, contains more pores, and produces twice as much oil (sebum). Because of this, demand for pharmaceutical-grade skincare products made with natural ingredients is trending worldwide. Experts agree: adopting a personalized skincare routine significantly contributes to the skin’s youthful appearance.

MAINTAINING APPEARANCES

Male collagen production declines at a constant rate over time with signs of age appearing gradually. Factors that amplify aging include ultraviolet exposure among others. Knowing your skin type is necessary for types of products to consider for daily care and maintenance.

KNOW YOUR SKIN TYPE

  • Sensitive – possible allergic reactions; stinging, burning after product use.
  • Normal – overall oil and moisture is balanced; T-zone (forehead, nose, chin) may be slightly oily.
  • Dry – lack of moisture in the top layer of the skin.
  • Oily – shiny appearance, oily skin is acne-prone skin with open pores.
  • Combination – dry in some areas while oily in others.

SKINCARE MAINTENANCE TIPS

Daily and after exercise, use lukewarm water and a mild facial cleanser (avoid bar soap with harsh, drying ingredients). For sensitive skin, mild, fragrance-free products are recommended; unscented products may contain masking fragrances that irritate the skin. Oil-free and non-comedogenic products that do not clog pores are recommended for oily skin.

  • Shaving – Wet skin and facial hair, use moisturizing shaving cream. Shave in the direction of hair growth, avoid stretching the skin. To avoid skin irritation, consider a single-blade or double-blade razor (change blade after 5-7 uses) rinsing after each swipe.
  • Moisturize – While skin is damp, immediately moisturize after showering or bathing. Moisturizers help restore skin’s youthful glow, reducing the appearance of fine lines.
  • Inspect – Suspicious spots can appear on skin and men 50 years and older are at a higher risk for developing melanoma. Consult a practitioner for new areas that itch, bleed, or change color.
  • SPF & UPF – The sun’s UV rays cause skin damage and premature aging. Water-resistant, broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 30+) is recommended after sweating or swimming. Ultraviolet protection factor (UPF) clothing gives additional protection.

Each person’s rate of aging is unique. That being said, customizing a daily skincare regimen is a strategic resource for maintaining a healthy, youthful appearance.
